When I think of Boston University, I think of the city of Boston, and I think of that summer. It was the summer of 2004, the time I visited America as a 8th grader in China. Boston was the first stop of our route and it was a good start of our trip. I was charmed by the wisdom hidden in the ancient buildings surrounding me  and the vitality of the city reflected by the blue sky. What made Boston more of a surprise to me was Boston University, which I saw when our car went along the riverbank. Thus, Boston University became the first university I had been so close to and I could tell that the university represented the city.

I choose Boston University not only because how much I love its location and campus, but also because of its quality of education. The department of economics and the department of psychology in the College of Art&Science which I am applying to, are well known in the country. Thus, if I am accepted, I will be given the top education from the prominent professors. Efficiency and concentration are what I consider the most important when I study. Most of the classes at Boston University have no more than thirty students. Such classes do help me to promote my efficiency in learning and make it convenient for me to discuss with all my classmates and with my professor.

I choose Boston University also because it is a gateway to the success of my career. Upon graduation from Boston University, I plan to work in a company as a member of its marketing team. What I find the most important in marketing is to communicate with consumers, even with competitors. At Boston University, students spend more time learning outside the classroom, which means that most of the time, students communicate with the society of Boston, which is a society of creation. It would be impossible for me to predict how many skills of communication I will learn through my four years of studying at Boston University. I desire to practice the skills I learn in my classes every moment and to obtain even more knowledge by utilizing the knowledge I already have. I believe that studying at Boston University is a great opportunity to enrich my experience and to expand my career potential.

What makes Boston University even more attractive to me is its social harmony. I learned from the view book that there were about 4700 international students from more than 120 countries on the campus. In such a place where different cultures are mixed, there would be little discrimination. Therefore, I can concentrate on studying and achieve my career goal.

W What are your inner strengths and how do you build them?

W

With a -2.5 prescription, I could barely see things clearly. When I looked around, I felt like wandering in a confusing dream that had lasted for two months, ever since I left China for America. It started with the hope of a life with freedom of seeking and getting what I desired . Yet, it went in an opposite direction. I felt empty inside even though I was too busy studying and stressed to relax. Good grades could not thrill me because I earned them. I felt so numb, so I ran. I ran to seek what would clear the mist and make me alive.  I did not stop until I saw him. The longer I stared at him, the more I liked him. I thought that I had found my glasses.

I loved my glasses, but found them not fitting my face. Again and again,  my glasses slipped down my nose and hung off my ears. I could not count how many times I tried to push them back up, or how many times I wiped them hard to see clearly. I frowned, yawned, smiled, cried and yelled to get them to stay on my nose. Finally, feeling sore and strength less, my facial muscles and bones wanted to rest. “Should I get another pair? Maybe they are not the glasses for me”. But I did not quit because to me, anger and frustration were better than misery.

So days went on. One day, I heard his favorite piano song, “ Kiss the Rain” and was thrilled. Because I played the piano well, I decided to prove myself by playing him the song in school‘s Talent Show. I put on my glasses and practiced.  When my glasses slipped off my nose, I could not push them back on because my ten fingers were too busy.  Once or twice I hit the wrong keys when my glasses fell to the floor. But when I closed my eyes to concentrate on capturing the strength and the hope in the melody,  I could not feel my glasses.

Finally the day of my piano performance came. I sat down and touched the keys. I did not wear my glasses because they would slip off and distract me. I finished without a mistake, put on my glasses, stood up and looked at the audience. I heard a storm of applause, so I bowed. Opps! My glasses fell off the floor. Then I could no longer see people’s expressions. But I gave them my biggest smile for so clearly, I saw that I was the best because even though I failed fighting for my glasses, I successfully used my ability to get this moment of passion and pride. I picked up my glasses, put them in my pocket and walked back to my seat with all my confidence.

college essay

Every time I travel from my hometown Hangzhou to other places, the car crosses the Qiantang  River Bridge, which is a railway and highway combined bridge. My father told me that it was designed by Mao Yisheng, who earned his Master’s degree from Cornell University. This was how I knew about Cornell University. Later my teachers taught me that people like Hu Shi and Yuen Ren Chao were also once the students at Cornell. I was inspired by them and was amazed at how Cornell trained so many great people in history. As a child, I dreamed of studying at Cornell.

As I grew up, I discovered the joy of solving math problems. Solving math problems not only makes me more logical, but also lets me know how much more I need to discover.  How proud I felt when I got the permission for the quarter-final of International Math Olympics competition in 7th grade. Immediately, I devoted myself into the preparation for the final. Even though I did not get into the final, I was satisfied because I ascended another storey to see a thousand miles further.  I believe that if I am accepted by Cornell, I will be surrounded by only the best and brightest students in the nation. I believe that at Cornell, I will find more stories to climb.

However, my interest not only lays on math, but also economy. I have the passion to major in marketing. Even though I have not been exposed to the society yet, I already have some experience in selling. The first thing I sold was rock candy. I sold rock candies to fund for breast cancer with Chinese club members in 10th grade. The process of setting an appropriate price and encouraging students to consume was quiet challenging, but was also exciting, especially when we beat other clubs by earning $300 profit. I learned that marketing was not only about passion and analyzing, but was also about gaining experience from communicating with consumers, even with competitors. Thus, I hope I can enrich my experience and expand my career potential by studying abroad, especially in France. One of my career goals is to be trained in LV company in France in order to learn how to make luxuries so popular among ordinary people. I look forward to the chance of studying abroad which Cornell considers an integral part of the Cornell undergraduate degree.

After all, I seek to integrate knowledge from diverse subjects. I prefer to take a wide range of courses across a range of disciplines because I think that different subjects complement each other. Thus, it would be great to study at Cornell, which is a college for any person and any study.

When applying to colleges, high school seniors all like to choose colleges with vigor and prestige. When I apply to colleges, I also look for colleges that are for me and colleges that look for a student like me. Thus, I apply to Emory University.

I choose Emory University because I can fit in Emory University’s community really well. Students and teachers at Emory devote themselves to the well being of the society. I consider myself to be friendly and dedicated. I hope to express my personal values by using my ability to benefit the society. By doing things as easy as helping decorating the hallways for our school spirit day and things as hard as being the lighting engineer at school’s Talent Show, I utilize my ability as an artist and a leader, and, more importantly, I give back to the community through my work.

I choose Emory also because I have the courage that Emory expects from its students. I have the courage to overcome difficulties. After finishing elementary school and middle school in China,  I came to America in 10th grade. I adapted to the brand new life and the different education techniques in one week. Then I started to challenge myself. Even though English was a new language to me, I took AP Macroeconomics and AP  Psychology, which required ten pages of reading every day during my senior year. Taking college courses challenged myself and provided an idea of what I would face in college. I also have the courage to fully develop myself in a new environment. Keeping my GPA at 3.96, I participated in school’s chorus, tennis club and Chinese club and performed at school’s International Night. During my sophomore year and junior year, I did volunteer work at nursing centers, book stores and county’s recycling community. In the summer of 2007, I enrolled in the GEMS program, in which I learned basic biological lab skills at Naval Research Medical Center in silver spring. My experiences in those activities sharpened myself into a better person and expanded my career potential. At Emory, I will find more people who also seek to overcome difficulties and to challenge themselves, therefore Emory’s community will help me ascend another storey to see a thousand miles further.

I prefer to take a wide range of courses across a range of disciplines including the sciences, social sciences, and humanities because those subjects complement each other. For example, it is necessary to use statistical methods when designing a psychological experiment or a biological experiment. I can design a better psychological experiment because I have learned about standard deviation, random selection, and experimental bias in my statistics class. Also, to me, the purpose of learning is not to be eminent in one field, but is to improve my life by using everything I have learned. History makes me more sophisticated, statistics makes me more logical, art makes me more creative, and sciences make me more explorative. Thus, I would be more successful.

a.     Before I took economics class, I knew little about stocks and I thought the stocks analysis graph was the most complicated thing ever.  But because I did want to understand them, I took economics and learned a lot about the money supply, the bank system, the changes in prices and  so on.  My classmates and I participated in the county wide stock market game with our teacher and our team was the top 10. Now, every time I read the business news, I feel that it is so awesome to learn what seemed to be so professional and to hear news about things I have learned in my economics class everyday. I also like my psychology class a lot. Many people think that psychology is boring because you need to memorize so many definitions and the history of psychology.  However, I think that studying psychology is like learning more about yourself. I find it easy and fun to learn about things like the defense mechanisms and to understand why I respond to different situations differently both consciously and unconsciously. I participated in the GEMS program during the summer before my senior year. The mentors taught us the structures of the brain and the eyes and how they are cheated by illusion. It is somehow ironic that even though we know how we are cheated by illusions, we sometimes still cannot realize what is real and what is hallucinatory. Once, I showed some pictures that give us illusions to my class and had an exciting discussion. In my psychology class I learned that there was always new things for me to discover.

 b.     I enjoy to work in a multi-disciplinary team. I have lots of experiences of working in such a team.  I have worked in such a team in my technology class at school. It was the time for our final project and we chose to build a solar car. In order to build a solar car that had a high speed and requires little polar energy, we searched for information about what absorbs light efficiently, what material produces the least friction and how to connect the wires. We discussed with  each other and with our teacher to get solutions when we went the wrong direction. It was amazing how well people cooperated  with others even though they did not have too much communications before. I was the team leader, thus I needed to allocate the tasks and remind my team members. I asked my team members to be really efficient because I  was a very efficient person myself. There were times when some members wanted to change a  topic to work on, because they found it hard to find useful resources and they found the research taking too much time. So I taught them how to research in a faster way and I reallocated their tasks. I used my experiences of being a leader when I was in China to encourage my team members to do their best.

C.  I prefer to take a wide range of courses across a range of disciplines including the sciences, social sciences, and humanities because those subjects complement each other.
